I’m doing NaNo!

Shield-Nano-Side-Blue-Brown-RGB-HiRes[1]

And I’ll be posting updates here. It’s a modified NaNo. I’m shooting for 50k brand new words, but not all on one project. Here’s what I’m working towards:

  • ~20k words on The Poet’s Return, which is December’s Patreon release
  • ~20k words on The King and his Makers, the third book in the Tale of Rebellion series (the last third really needs a rewrite).
  • ~10k words on a proof-of-concept story for a new secondary world universe that I’m tentatively calling the Soulbroker universe.

Are you all doing NaNo? Want to buddy up? You can find my NaNo profile here! Ping me on the site, and I’ll be your buddy! Otherwise, you can follow my trials and tribulations over on Patreon (all NaNo updates will be free content; you will be able to access them without a subscription).

RESISTANCE Re-Release!

RESISTANCE Final Draft.jpg

Hi friends!

I am so excited to show you the new cover C. Bedford has created for Resistance! Isn’t is lovely? I love every damn thing about it! She has captured so many awesome little details here–Rivna’s tattoos, Shandolin’s neck wounds, the messy back alley in the City.

Which brings me to my next point. Have you read Resistance? Were you thinking about it, but then were like ‘oh well, shit, now it’s out of print’? Guess what! I’m re-releasing it through the Kraken Collective!

The formal re-release of the second edition will go live August 15. But Patreon subscribers at the $4 level (Word Hoarder) will get an ebook sent to them next Sunday!

Subscribers at the $6 level (Completionist) will get both the ebook next Sunday and will have a signed copy of the second edition print book sent to them as soon as that’s available (on or around August 15).

The second edition has minor changes to the text and includes a small selection of additional short fiction related to the novel. I hope you enjoy it!

“Sigils” is available on Patreon!

It’s here! Patreon subscribers at the $1 level and up now have access to “On The Market.” Not a subscriber? It’s not too late–sign up, and you can get the story! Here’s the blurb:

The City of Mages is built, but it is not safe. One of the mages is murdering the others, and Resident 5613 has been assigned to find out why–and stop the murderer if they can.

The story is attached here in the following formats: PDF, MOBI, and EPUB.

This one’s different than a lot of my other Aerdh stuff. The Magi are explored in greater depth–so if you’ve had wonderings about how the City of Mages came to be, this story fills in some of those gaps. And while there is the requisite amount of social justice navel gazing in this one, as always, this one is also a murder mystery.

As always, thank you for reading! Reviews are welcome and appreciated if you feel so moved! “Sigils” has a Goodreads page here.

It’s here! Patreon subscribers at the $1 level and up now have access to “On The Market.” Not a subscriber? It’s not too late–sign up, and you can get the story! Here’s the blurb:

Liro is stymied by a painting that could make or break his nascent artistic career. Shai is a runaway, come to the City of Mages looking for solace, and finding it only in the drug dens. When their paths cross, the moment changes both their lives.

The story is attached here in the following formats: PDF, MOBI, and EPUB.

The following TRIGGER WARNINGS apply for this story:
– addiction/substance abuse (both main characters)
– sex work
– attempted suicide

All things considered I think this is a pretty uplifting story, but the warnings above are definitely warranted.

Thank you for reading! Reviews are welcome and appreciated if you feel so moved! “On The Market” has a Goodreads page here.

“On The Market” – Cover Reveal and Release Date!

OnTheMarket_Cover

Look at that! “On the Market” has a cover! Annnnnd it has a release date–next Sunday, this short story will be available to Patreon subscribers at the $1 level and up!

Here’s the Official Blurb:

Liro is stymied by a painting that could make or break his nascent artistic career. Shai is a runaway, come to the City of Mages looking for solace, and finding it only in the drug dens. When their paths cross, the moment changes both their lives.

(That was really hard to write. I hate writing blurbs. For what it’s worth, what I wanted to write was ‘Hey, read this, it’s about two queer mixed-race dudes dealing with self-acceptance and addiction. Also…um, trigger warning for addiction.’)

For those of you wondering, that is the same Liro from ARIAH (but quite a bit younger). This story is set in the City of Mages and is just under 6k words. Oh! Also, it has a Goodreads page here.

Patreon 2.0

Hi friends! I’ve done some thinking, and it’s time to revamp this Patreon. Not drastically – this is still a venue for exclusive Aerdh-focused fiction – but enough that I hope it will create a more consistent output from me, and therefore yield more consistent rewards for you all. As such, here are the revised subscriber levels, goals, and a draft release schedule through the end of this year.*

You can see this year’s release schedule by subscriber level above. Leave me a comment if you have any thoughts or questions!

Patreon Goals

$100 – Monthly AMAs

Do you have questions about writing? Publishing? Character arcs in Aerdh? Worldbuilding in Aerdh? Life in general? If I get to this goal level, then I will unlock a monthly AMA session, hosted on Google hangouts, where Patreon subscribers can ask me anything they want.

$200 – Serial Monthly Content

Here’s an idea I’ve been playing around with: serialized monthly fiction delivered to your email inbox like clockwork! I’ve got a few different narratives I think it could work for, but I definitely need some additional start up funds to make it work (for cover art, copy edits, etc), so this is a stretch goal for now.

Other Things of Note

I’m going to start placing last year’s rewards/releases up for retail as they hit the one-year mark, and I’m going to make that a standard practice from here on out as I’ve gotten some requests for access to materials released through Patreon from people without access to it. A delayed release schedule like that seems the fairest way to both meet that need and honor you lovely people who have subscribed here, but please let me know if there’s an angle I’ve missed by doing this.

I’m making a concerted effort to keep my blog, Patreon, and newsletter all relatively aligned, which means they are somewhat duplicative. I’m not sure how many of you are subscribed to my newsletter, but that is where I typically let folks know about new releases. Random thoughts go on the blog. Free Patreon posts always get cross-posted on both the blog and the newsletter.

*I have much of 2018 sketched out, too, but that is pretty far down the line, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

I have SUCH NEWS for you! I shall give to you in list form, because I think in lists. Do you think in lists?
  • The Patreon Novella will be released on Friday, Tuesday 7, 2017. This date is firm. This date is in my planner. Anyone at the $5 and above level will have their novella on that date in ebook form.
  • As a reminder, the title is In The Company of Strangers and features Sorcha and Shayat from my novel, ARIAH.
  • The novella takes places in the city of Ma-Halad, on the edge of the Qin Empire and the Droma grasslands. I have recently spent a lot of time looking at photos of wheat fields on the internet. A truly shocking number feature brides, grooms, and dogs.
  • STAY TUNED FOR A VERY EXCITING SURPRISE VERY SOON LEADING UP TO THE RELEASE!

ARIAH has relaunched!

In the wake of Zharmae’s closing, I was faced with a choice:

  • take my book and go quietly into the night, shopping it around as a possible reprint
  • relaunch it myself immediately

I’ve decided to do both things. I’ve put a couple of feelers out to people who might be interested in reprinting Ariah–people with resources and reach I don’t have alone–but in the meantime, this little book has grown legs!

There are readers who would like to buy it in the interim, in both ebook and paperbook formats, and it feels not super cool to keep Ariah out of circulation just because when it takes not a terrible amount of effort to put it back in circulation.

So: Ariah is available, as a second edition, via Amazon in both print and digital formats. One day there might be yet a third edition, if any of those feelers pan out, but maybe not, so what is there to lose really?

Psst – there is a giveaway happening right now through my newsletter. You can sign up for the newsletter mailing list here, if you haven’t already, and enter the giveaway here.

2nd Edition Ebook | 2nd Edition Print

The second edition has no story or grammatical changes in the text compared to the first edition. Really, the only change is that the first edition was published by Zharmae, and this edition is published by me, and thus they have different ISBNs. I did take the opportunity to make some slight differences to layout and book design, but again, the book does not have any additional content, so if you already have a copy of Ariah, I can’t really tell you in good conscience to pick up a copy of the second edition (unless you’re like OMG I MUST SUPPORT B IN EVERYTHING THEY DO in which case…thank you! You’re very sweet and encouraging!!).

New Patreon Release: “A Matter Of Circumstance”

AMatterOfCircumstance_CoverA brand new, never-before-seen Aerdhverse story is available via my Patreon for subscribers at the $1 level and up! For information about Patreon subscriptions and the reward tiers, go here.

This one, “A Matter of Circumstance”, is directly tied to Ariah; I don’t think you have to have read the book to enjoy the story, but the context probably helps. Here’s a blurb about the story.

Ariah’s abduction throws everything into chaos. What are Sorcha and Shayat willing to sacrifice to get him back? How does their story change? What do they mean to each other now that he is not there to intercede?
